Gaming on a 2GB GPU, in 2026?

Recently I tested some graphics cards with just 2GB of RAM on my channel. Starting with an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660 last year, and more recently some AMD cards, namely a 2GB RX560 and an R9 255. Both cut-down OEM cards.

The first of these was kinda in response to a Budget-Builds video where his GTX 745 did quite bad in Linux. That can't be right, right?

Well, it turned out that my GTX 660 didn't do great on Linux either. Not by far as bad as his 745 (which I later tried as well, btw), but performance in Windows as simply better.

That should be better on AMD cards, given the great open-source amdgpu driver-support. Right? Well... it turned out that at least these 2GB cards aren't doing that well on Linux either!

Anyway, is gaming on a 2GB card feasible at all? Well there's certainly some relatively-modern games that run well on these cards! Obviously not at 1440p 200FPS, but 720p or even some 1080p gaming goes a long way on these!
